These Final Hours (2014)

Rob's Review

‘These Final Hours’ is a 2013 apocalyptic thriller starring Nathen Philips, and Angourie Rice. The film was written and directed by Zak Hilditch.

Now I know what you are thinking don’t we have enough of these apocalyptic and or post-apocalyptic movies out already? Well the answer is yes, and I am starting to get annoyed with the number of them, but this one is quite different; you know how the movie is going to end within the first few minutes mainly because of what the movie is about the title of the movie as well as it’s not a romantic sci-fi like most of the apocalyptic movies are, this scenario is a very real scenario that could and can happen.

The movie takes place a few minutes after a meteor has collided with earth in the North Atlantic ocean leaving only 12 hours of life before the firestorm reaches the west coast of Australia. The movie follows James (Nathen Philips), as he attempts to make his way to the party in his last few hours of life but runs into trouble when he saves the life of Rose (Angourie Rice).

There was not a lot I didn’t like about this movie, in fact this is one of those movies where after it you have nothing to say but wow! What did I just watch? But that doesn’t mean I don’t have issues with it. It has some minor problems like slow in some parts (considering you have 12 hours to play with, it does get slow).

This movie, is an interesting and really confronting movie, about the possibility of total extinction of life on earth.

One aspect that I really liked about the film is every now and again you would hear a radio station presenter signing and telling people about what parts of the earth had just been lost, and postured on about philosophical questions.

Perhaps I have a little bit of biased here but Sarah Snook’s role (Mandy’s Mum) even though short was possibly one of the highlights of the movie just in the way she portrayed a very troubled mother after losing her daughter. I also felt that Nathen Philips’ role (James) was extremely good as well especially as the movie progressed along.

The character development between James and Rose felt as if they were brother and sister, which made for an interesting movie as it allowed me to feel like I was waiting for the event to happen as well.

This movie is, as I said, a very confronting movie, and has some extremely weird but possible scenarios presented within it.
