The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015)

Daniel's Review

“Who lives in a pineapple, under the sea?”

SpongeBob SquarePants returns to the big screen in the sequel ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water’. This is technically a sequel, but can also be considered as a standalone film, because there are no mentions to the enjoyable first film 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie', released back in 2004.

I was a huge fan of the early seasons of ‘SpongeBob SqaurePants’ when I was a kid. I haven’t seen the show for nearly ten years, and since then, the show hasn't changed all that much over all of these years, it still looks the same, which is good, because it was easy to get back into the world of Bikini Bottom.

The film follows a pirate (Antonio Banderas) who finds a book (I call it the book of life), as it tells the story of how Bikini Bottom become an apocalyptic world, after the missing Krabby Patty formula.

While it has a very simplistic story, the majority of the film comes off as an extended episode of the TV series, and doesn’t feel like a big screen motion picture, until the film’s last act where the characters are transformed from cartoon to 3D animation, and becomes a hybrid of live-action and CGI, which was a blast to watch.

Just to clarify what I mean by the film being an extended episode of the series, is that in my opinion, films being an adaption of a currently made TV series needs to have some impact on the series in order to be made as a theatrical 90 minute film. The first film did this with the character growth of SpongeBob and Patrick. This film attempts to do this with one of the film's central characters, but is short-lived.

Despite the simplistic story, the film was very enjoyable, filled with many laughs and some nice-looking animation.

'The SpongeBob Movie' is an enjoyable ride for the whole family to enjoy, and it is so great to see traditional animation back on the big screen.

Rob's Review

Are you ready kids? Aye aye captain!

'SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water', the animated 2015 film, and sequel to the 2004 film 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'. Directed by Paul Tibbitt and starring Antonio Banderas as Burger Beard and the ever funny Tom Kenny as SpongeBob.

The movie opens when a pirate by the name of Burger Beard is reading from an unnamed book, the book of course being about a yellow sponge who lives under the sea. Not to give too much away, Plankton is up to his old tricks and is trying to steal the krabby patty secret formula.

I really enjoyed this movie, and if I was 11 years younger, I would have loved it just as much as I loved the first one.

Let’s start with the things I loved about this movie. I loved the silliness that I can expect with SpongeBob, with jokes that make me laugh and things that make no sense whatsoever, but I still loved, like the time machine that was made out of sausages.

The story, while having some issues, I found mostly enjoyable. However, with that being said, the story did have a few continuity issues, and some characters like Pearl and Larry the Lobster were not seen at all. Okay, they appeared in the closing credits, but have them there or not at all.

Another issue I had with this movie is its selling point. The title says 'Sponge Out of Water' which I kind of took that as the majority of the movie was going to be CGI. I was poorly mistaken. The movie was 90% animation and 10% CGI, now don’t get me wrong I loved both parts, but you do not market a movie and title the movie saying 'Sponge Out of Water' and have the sponge in the water for most of the movie; that’s like saying 'The Simpsons Movie', but only having 2 of the family in it or something like that.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed the movie. It was not as good as the first one, but I will not be comparing them since different writers, and too far apart.

Overall, if you are looking for a family friendly movie to watch over the school holidays where both parents and kids will laugh, I recommend you to go and see this movie.
