The Great Gatsby (2013)
Daniel's Review
First off, let's start with the positives.
The movie has the best visuals out of any other movie I've seen all year.
It also has a lot of style, costumes look amazing.
Acting is top notch, well-acted and well-directed.
Negatives, the story isn't relatively strong and is too long than it really needs to be. The beginning of the film isn't very interesting as the film gets exciting when we hear about Gatsby. Some of the dialogue is a bit clunky, but can easily be overlooked it for its visuals.
Overall, the film does have its problems, but it is well-acted, well-directed, has some great looking visuals out of any movie I've seen all year and it's very stylish.
The Great Gatsby is a good film, but could have been greater.

Nic's Review
I didn't have high expectations for this movie and the fact that I ultimately found it constantly engaging and exciting is a reminder that a movie shouldn't be judged before it is seen.
Although the first act was questionable, fast cutting and uncanny voice-over was damaging to my suspension of disbelief, as the film wore on it became something more complex than I could have anticipated.
There are some deep themes of violence and betrayal in here and although I haven't read the book I'm sure that even if these ideas are borrowed they are executed so well with style and drama that it makes them believable.
Yes the direction, costumes and sets are a bit ludicrously extravagant but that's what makes a Baz Luhrmann film what it is.
The Great Gatsby is as good as any other Luhrmann film.
What a surprise!
