‘Terminator Genisys’ is the potential start of a new trilogy. I say potential, because ‘Terminator Salvation’ was supposed to be the start for a new trilogy. And look what happened there.

 

‘Terminator Genisys’ is a soft reboot, of a sequel, with a hint of a prequel, which is partially a remake, just in a different direction of the story, filled with complicating plot holes and continuity thrown right out the window. Before I begin, I have only seen the first ‘Terminator’ film, so even as a non-fan I was slightly disappointed.

 

The story is about Kyle Reese sent back in time by John Conner, to protect his mother Sarah Conner. And while this sounds fairly familiar from another film ‘The Terminator’, the story takes a full 360 twist and Sarah Conner is now fully aware of her situation with the original T-800, which is a cool twist, but doesn’t get fully explained, besides one flashback which still raises questions, than answers them to the audience.

 

The new villain, or villains?, were weak, with Jai Courtney ('Divergent') bland in his performance, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke ('Game of Thrones' fame) are pretty good and enjoyable in this film.

 

The action is pretty cool, but again, you already know how it ends by the trailers. Thank you again marketing people for ruining scenes in movie trailers.

 

I think ‘Genisys’ could have been better as a complete reboot of the franchise, but instead eliminates the films that fans love, which is an odd move.

 

‘Terminator Genisys’ is a disappointing sequel, but there are some fun moments in the film, with some cool ideas, and sometimes the homages to the first film are really well done to see.
