Stargate (1995)

Rob's Review

'Stargate' directed by Roland Emmerich is a 1994 movie that paved way and gave a foundation for a multifaceted TV series that ran for over 15 years.

Professor Jackson (James Spader) is forced to work with Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) to unlock a secret code on an ancient Egyptian object known as the Stargate. After solving the code, Jackson and O’Neil go through the Stargate and find they are trapped on an Egyptian like planet, that is located half way across our universe.

The movie started off with a great premise and the movie delivered on it for the first hour of the movie, after that the film couldn’t save itself no matter how it tried. The story arc in this film is great, traveling to a distant world, fighting alien gods. A sci-fi paradise to anyone who loves a good sci-fi flick.

However, that is about the only good thing about it, and that storyline only lasts for about half the movie; after that the story turns into an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist. About half way through the movie the plot and story gets extremely hard to follow and doesn’t even make sense. But perhaps that is just me.

Professor Daniel Jackson, meets a girl on this Egyptian planet, and starts to kiss her, while I’m fine with this concept (every movie needs a bit of romance) I’m not okay with the actress who was being kissed to look like she was 12. It just makes the movie look not appealing to a wider audience.

The climax in this movie, was well not very climatic, after what I had just sat through I was expecting something bigger then what I got. No spoilers obviously, but the climax after all the action sci-fi and entertainment I just watched, failed to impress me.

As a result this movie, even though has a brilliant sci-fi premise (which I hope the TV show makes up for) it is not worth the time seeing it.
