Red Riding Hood (2011)

Daniel's Review

‘Red Riding Hood’? Yes, there is a girl with a red hood, but this film should have been called ‘Guess Who?’, because it was basically figuring out who the werewolf is.

This is where I tell a little about the summary of the film’s plot. But I have already said it as my introduction, so I guess all that’s left to say is… there is a village of people, scared of a werewolf, the werewolf comes to village, and all hell breaks… (you know the last word I always say)… loose.

Shockingly enough, I liked what they were trying to go here, re-imagining the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, but twist the story and tell it as a horror type film, which I liked, however, there isn’t much horror, as there are literally scenes that are supposed to make the audience jump, but it doesn’t, instead it’s just a jump scare of a useless character.

While we are talking about characters, they were highly underdeveloped. I knew nothing about these characters. The one I knew a little more was Peter, because he was a woodcutter. Plus, if you’ve seen the movie, then you’ll know what I’m talking about in the film’s opening scene. A character becomes deceased, but instead of being an emotional and frightening scene, because we knew nothing about that character or the relationship with the film’s main character, it isn’t effective, only to be frustrated by the lack of characterization from the film’s characters. Some backstory would have been nice. Gary Oldman’s character was a better villain, than the film’s actual villain.

What did I like about the film? The werewolf looked pretty good. Good job with some of the visual effects. That's all I can say.

Concluding, ‘Red Riding Hood’ has a talented cast, but is wasted by the film’s poorly written script, with little to no character development and a much unfocused narrative. And I am a huge fan of fairy-tale films, I tried to like it, but it was just a mess. Even ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ may be silly, but that film had some fun to it; this film was serious and still didn’t work as a horror thriller type flick.

Anyone up for a game of 'Guess Who?'
