“A Little Friendship Never Killed Anyone”.

 

I love that tagline on the film’s theatrical poster, because it actually sums up the film quite cleverly.

 

More about the film’s story, the film follows Greg, a self-loathing teenager who acts a little awkward around people who doesn't want to be invisible at school as he enters into his senior year. Greg spends time with a student who goes to his school named Rachel has been diagnosed with leukaemia.

 

The movie is moving at places, its storytelling is quite different, however does stumble at times, but for the most part is pretty solid about a “doomed friendship” that becomes a sweet and charming film, and while others may find it emotionally driven, while I didn’t shed a tear, I was still quite moved by the characters and the talent on screen.

 

The acting is solid, especially from the film’s three lead actors, with praise towards Olivia Cooke delivering a great performance – and one of my favourites of the year.

 

The direction by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is clever and brilliant, with amazing cinematography.

 

The only times the film does wrong is the not enough development towards the film’s leading character; Rachel, but despite this, the friendship towards Greg and Earl is one of the film’s stand-out moments.

 

Don’t get me wrong, ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ is a solid and clever film, with some faults in the screenplay, however the movie is a moving and quirky film with strong acting performances and great direction throughout.
