Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)

Daniel's Review

After being fairly impressed and entertained by last year’s surprise hit ‘The Maze Runner’; with that film’s conclusion setting up further events for the sequel, we now arrive to that said sequel with ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’.

This time, Thomas and friends have been transported to a faculty where it hosts all other kids who’ve been in mazes, just like the Glade. With Thomas finding out something is wrong with the faculty they are present in, Thomas and friends escape, only to find themselves alone in the Scorch.

Everything you loved about ‘The Maze Runner’ is present in this follow-up, and to my fears that the sequel wouldn’t live up its previous film, even without the suspense of the maze, the sequel is actually really enjoyable, and at times fun to watch.

The characters are still underdeveloped, but with new characters introduced in this film, they surprisingly get more character development than the returning originals, as I found the newcomers stronger than some of the Gladers we’ve seen in the first film.

Although, ‘The Scorch Trials’ does have some problems, with its slow-paced middle act that felt overlong to a fault and some character moments that didn’t quite feel emotional with some lack of character development, however, at times the sequel is stronger than the first film, but because of the second act, the film is slightly behind the first film’s pacing and flow of narrative.

Don’t get me wrong, ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ has some great action-sequences and has a few character moments which provides some heart to the film.

The sequel is a nice follow-up to the ‘The Maze Runner’, and if you are a fan, you’ll find it as an enjoyable flick to check out in the theatres.
