Matilda (1996)

Daniel's Review

Based upon the book by Roald Dahl with the same name as the movie, ‘Matilda’ is a 1996 film, directed by Danny DeVito, and also stars DeVito as Matilda’s father.

The film is about a girl named Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) who loves to read and learn, as she comes from a family who doesn’t appreciate her, so when she gets to go to school and learn, she couldn’t be happier, however, the school she attends is nothing than a happy place, run by Principal Trunchbull (Pam Ferris).

‘Matilda’ has a talented cast, with Mara Wilson perfectly cast as the film’s titular protagonist, Pam Ferris providing a scary, but yet complex character, performance as Principal Trunchbull, Embeth Davidtz provides a great acting performance as the sweet Miss Honey, and even Matilda’s parents, portrayed by Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, are hilarious as Matilda’s parents.

The film’s direction is wonderfully brilliant from Danny DeVito, and never loses focus on the film’s story.

While ‘Matilda’ can be a bit silly, it’s hard not to overlook the film’s charm, as it is hilarious, emotionally sweet, and fun for the whole family – and you may learn a thing or two.

'Matilda' is Mrs. G, Mrs. R, Mrs. E, A, T.
