Daniel's Review

DreamWorks Animation continues their decline in quality animation storytelling with their newest film ‘Home’, with the voice talents of Jim Parsons (‘The Big Bang Theory’) and Rihanna (‘Battleship’).

‘Home’ is about an alien race called the Boov which they invade Earth and relocate the humans, as the Boov run Earth, but Oh (Parsons) is unique, so he wants to have a party to fit in, and sends an email to everyone in his contacts list, which in that list includes their enemy who keeps destroying their planet called the Gorg. Why are they on the Boov’s contacts list? To tell a story, I guess! But Tip (Rihanna) is the last human left in the alien populated Earth, and seeks out to find her mother. Best Synopsis Ever!

Let’s get the positives out first, the animation is very nice looking and is extremely colourful. Oh, and Tip is the most likeable character in this film, which does provide some heart-warming scenes.

Now, the problems with ‘Home’  is very inconsistent writing and the story is very messy. The first half is incredibly weak, thanks to the little story development that doesn’t move the film along, instead the film feels like it backtracks, and doesn’t move the story along until the film’s final thirty minutes.

‘Home’ feels strictly for the little kids, even with the jokes and characters like Oh, the film will not interest adults, which is very disappointing because every other DreamWorks Animation movies had something there for adults to be interested, as well for the kids, but ‘Home’ doesn’t have any appeal to an older audience. But you may say that isn’t ‘Home’ a kids movie? I always say against it that it is not a kids movie, animated films are family movies, since the whole family goes out and see animated films together, so they should also interest the parents, and not just the kids.‘Home’ isn’t a very good family movie, being more generic, than creative, with clichéd humour and a weak story to boot. The kids will like it, but as a family film, it is very disappointing.

‘Home’ is not much fun!

Rob's Review

The new DreamWorks Animation movie 'Home' is a pondering question that is how did it get off the cutting room floor?

'Home' stars Jim Parsons as Oh, a Boov running from the Gorg to the planet Earth, where he meets the last survivor of the Boov invasion Tip (Rihanna) an 11 year-old human who is looking for her mum. The unlikely pair team up to find Tip's mum; and stop an email that Oh sent from going to the Boov enemy, the Gorg, (did the DreamWorks team think that this movie wasn’t confusing enough without the weird name?).

The only thing I really enjoyed about this movie was…NOTHING…the animation is decent, but a company like DreamWorks Animation should be able to produce a movie that has decent animation anyway. There was a very small fraction of funny scenes that appealed to adults, being a family movie and knowing DreamWorks Animation, they throw in humor for both the parents and the kids. Don’t get me wrong, this movie was the funniest thing since sliced bread if you were 5-10, but failing if you are not that age, this movie was not enjoyable.

The story, or lack there off, was extremely thin and in some points hard to explain what was happening, leaving me confused about why this happened or why that happened. The story of 'Home' is nothing more than a two 45 minute TV special. By that I mean the story in the first half has nothing to do with the story in the second half. As a result this story, or stories, are underdeveloped and confusing as they leave a lot of what? Why? When? Whose? Out.

I will admit the soundtrack was amazing but unfortunately it was self-promotion and nothing more. The only original music that was in the movie was done by, that’s right you guessed it, Rihanna, who played the lead role. That for me just was too much.

Overall, unless you are a child aged 5-10, this movie is strictly a kids movie and not one for the family as that is their primary target audience with no appeal to the mum's or dad's sitting in the audience.
