Focus (2015)

Rob's Review

This new Will Smith movie is directed and written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. 'Focus' is an interesting movie filled with some surprising twists and turns, but not enough to keep the mind entertained throughout the film. Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) plays the leader of a pick pocket/con artists group, who recruits Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie). They eventually end up in Buenos Aires where Smith is conning the racing track.

Will Smith's acting like always was just what you would expect, being able to be super serious to funny man within seconds. As well as being able to pull off extremely convincing personalities. Along with co-star Margot Robbie, she was able to produce a fantastic performance by keeping the audience wondering what her motive actually is.

This movie it self is one with twists and turns that will either make you go, I knew it, or wow did not see that coming. Some of these twists where foreseeable, but others not so much.

This movie unfortunately has a few issues. The first half an hour or so was promising and I really enjoyed the first act. But as the film progressed into the second act it become a little slow and dragged out in places. One scene to me didn't make a whole lot of sense, but I don't know if that was me or lazy story telling (when Smith was being questioned by his client). The third act was alright and could have been done better, but not enough to make it anywhere near anything else that has previously came out this year. And definitely not Smith's best movie.

Overall, even though it has some brilliant acting and the plot twists were interesting, the movie failed to give me anything of value as I have definitely seen better.
