Fast & Furious 7 (2015)

Daniel's Review

The seventh entry from the franchise that is all about fast cars and action galore. My first review for this page was ‘Fast & Furious 6’, back in 2013, so now a full two years later, the franchise continues to rev up their engines, even with the tragic passing of Paul Walker.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ starts with Dom’s team being hunted by ‘Fast & Furious 6’s villain Owen Shaw’s brother Deckard Shaw (played by Jason Statham), who practically shows up out of nowhere, throughout this film.

Let’s start with the positives, the acting performances are what you expect from a ‘Fast & Furious’ movie, with Jordana Brewster’s performance being quite moving and powerful when speaking with Dom and Brian.

The film is vibrant, really well directed with some cool moving camera shots with some great choreography from the fight shots, even if they might be too fast-paced at times.

The film’s story is a little messy at times, but knowing the film’s troubled production schedule, they did the best they could with the rewrites and trying to complete this feature film, in honour of Paul Walker, which they do with respect in a graceful, and emotional send-off for the character.

Now, there are problems with this latest entry, as I found the villain to be weak as he wasn't menacing or terrifying, comparing to the villains of the previous films, and was underdeveloped after playing a game of hide-and-go-seek. However, he does have an awesome introduction though.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ may have been slightly underwhelming, but the film was still fun and enjoyable, with crazy over the top action sequences, that you’d expect from this franchise, it could have been better, but in the end, the result is still an enjoyable, and quite emotional, ride.

“For Paul”.

Nic's Review

In my review for 'Fast and Furious 6' I had a lot to say about what this franchise stands for. Almost two years later, a lot has changed, most notably the death of Paul Walker. Enough has been said already on his death and its impact on the film's production so I won't go into too much detail here, only to note that the filmmakers have crafted a fitting sendoff and tribute to Walker with 'Furious 7' that is genuinely moving and heartfelt. In this aspect (the handling of Walker's death) the film shines most but unfortunately elsewhere it doesn't quite live up to expectation.

The plot of the film is a tale of vengeance on both sides. Villain, Deckard Shaw, is out to get revenge on Dom and his family for killing/hospitalising his younger brother, Owen, the antagonist of the previous instalment. Meanwhile Dom wants revenge on Deckard for killing Han, who was murdered in the post-credits scene of 'Fast 6'. It's unclear whether the film wants to condone revenge or condemn it but then 'Furious 7' isn't trying to teach anyone any lessons, other than perhaps the series' core theme of the importance of family.

It is the definition of mindless, dumb fun as we have come to expect from the franchise, though it does come close to jumping the shark in more than one action scene, a few of which contain traces of camp. The action scenes aren't something to be criticised, however; they're exactly what they're supposed to be, but the story is surprisingly lacklustre. It can't be too engaging when half of the film consists of a wild goose chase for an elusive hard drive containing GPS tracking data.

The characters are mainly all several films in by now so they're likeable by default but it's Jason Statham's Shaw that is the biggest letdown. Statham is intimidating but he is more one dimensional than a chalk drawing. Not interesting at all.

Finally, the primary concern with movies like this and the 'Transformers' franchise raking in billions of dollars worldwide is their TERRIBLE portrayal of women. I can't imagine a director who'd say, 'now I want a panning shot of her feet, slowly moving up to focus on her hips, breasts, lips, etcetera' and not realise how much of a sexist, objectifying d**k he's being. And it happens all the time in these blockbusters! (Personal aside: this one shot was my 15-year-old brother's favourite part of the entire film. This is the problem, people!) For this reason alone, 'Furious 7' disappoints greatly. Mindless fun is excusable in a franchise like this and 'Furious 7' does it better than anything else, it doesn't have to be art. But turning female characters into nothing more than shiny objects to be looked at, basically treated like the cars, is inexcusable.

'Furious 7' may be a minor offender compared to others but it's a trend that has to stop.

Rob's Review

Start your engines and get ready for a movie filled with cars, buildings, cars, women and, cars. 'Furious 7' is the latest sequel to the 'Fast and the Furious' franchise. Directed by James Wan and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. The movie promises everything it says on the box. Fast cars, car chases, a debatable CGI animated Paul Walker. Wait what?

That is my first issue with the movie, as in some scenes it was brilliant using a CGI Walker and you can’t tell the difference you would think it’s the real deal, but in some scenes you could tell he was CGI. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn't that noticeable and I’m not saying this is a bad thing for the hell of it. But for the amount of money this movie's budget is, I would have expected decent CGI throughout the movie.

Another issue I have with this movie is the unrealistic nature of some things. Again, I know its Hollywood and nothing they make is fully realistic, but cars falling out of the sky from a jumbo jet and landing perfectly on the road without any damage?

The movie's story is something that was done just right in this film, filled with both humour and tear jerking scenes. Something I have come to expect with big Hollywood blockbuster films. As well as the way they wrote Paul Walker out of the movie. Truly something that will stay with hard-core fans of both Paul walker and 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise, for years to come.

Overall, the movie succeeds, as it makes up for what the movie fails, in which makes it an enjoyable movie overall.
