Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)

Daniel's Review

The news team is back!

I’m not a big fan of Will Ferrell, but I do like some of his films and there are some favourites from him that I love like the first ‘Anchorman’ which I thought was just super funny, ‘The Other Guys’ a great comedy movie and ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ which no one seems to even know about, but that film is my favourite from funny man Will Ferrell because it’s not only a funny film, but is also a dramatic and at times an emotional movie, but that’s a review for another day.

This review is about the sequel to ‘Anchorman’ titled ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’. If you are a fan of the first movie, then you will love this, and even if you are not a fan or haven’t seen the first film, you might surprisingly enjoy it.

The sequel has less of a story than the first film had, but the first film didn’t have much of a story anyway. The sequel is about the news networks first 24 hour news channel, ever, crazy stuff right, and of course Ron Burgundy gets asked to join the news network along with his funny friends, Champ, Brian and of course Brick.

Everyone is so funny and there are some, I'll rephrase, a lot of laugh out loud moments, in fact, this movie made me laugh more times than any other movie this year. While other great comedies from this year like ‘This is the End’ and ‘The Heat’ had great comedic lines and dialogue, those films had more of a story structure to it, then ‘Anchorman 2’ has. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s ‘Anchorman’ and offers great one-liners and hilarious dialogue.

The best lines are definitely from Steve Carell’s character Brick. Every line Brick has is so funny, he is definitely the breakout character and highlight from this movie, but again, like I said before, everyone has at least a great line here and there.

There is one problem with the movie, that lasts for like 20 minutes where it still offers a couple of jokes and short giggles, but nothing what the rest of the movie had, where every scene made you laugh out loud.

But don’t worry, the ending is brilliantly hilarious, without giving away spoilers. All I can say, there are some amazing cameos.

Don’t think too much of the story, just enjoy it for what it is, a non-stop hilarious movie that will make you laugh more than once, probably more than a hundred times, it is incredibly funny.

Check it out with some friends, it is an enjoyable and entertaining movie.

Nic's Review

I haven't seen the first 'Anchorman' for several years so my impressions of its sequel were largely unaffected by the memory of the original.

That said, 'Anchorman 2' is one of the funniest films of the year and it delivers on its promises, which is rare for a comedy sequel. Some moments nearly had me falling out of my chair with laughter. So it is that when 'Anchorman 2' is funny it shines and the standouts here are by far Ferrell and Carell; the latter delivers slapstick humour in the bucketloads as Brick.

But the film isn't perfect.

The story in particular loses its way a few times, especially in the middle and it's almost as though the writers made it up as they went along in some parts. Various subplots and characters are also thinly drawn and whether they were necessary to drive the laughs and story is questionable. Prolonged periods of absent laughter can become tedious and I found myself caring for little but the jokes and the primary group of characters.

Nevertheless, 'Anchorman 2' makes up for these missteps with an outstanding third act that is far funnier than anything else in the film.

While not the best film of 2013, 'Anchorman 2' is well worth the time if you want a few good chuckles. At delivering those, it excels.
