Moving across the road, ’22 Jump Street’ may seem like similar territory, but does enough to differentiate itself from the first instalment with story and laughs, lots and lots of laughs.
’22 Jump Street’ sees the return of Schmidt and Jenko, played by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum respectively. The sequel is both funny, as it is heartfelt. The story may seem like the same, but does enough tweaks to make the sequel stand on its own.
The sequel is very funny, hilarious all the way through, and makes this sequel just as funny as the first instalment. As a fan of the first film, I was pleasantly entertained by the film’s chemistry between its two leading stars, the sequel’s self-awareness of being a sequel with its jokes and humour and the story is a solid one making the sequel a worthy entry in the ‘Jump Street’ franchise as ‘22’ is just as great as the first film and offers many surprises for both fans and non-fans of the comedy series to make this film, comedy movie of the year.
’22 Jump Street’ is something cool.

The boys are back in this unlikely sequel to 2012's surprise hit, '21 Jump Street', and fortunately it delivers more of the self-referential humour that made the 'original' so uh...original.
2014 has so far been a phenomenal year for film and 22 Jump Street does not slow it down. It speeds it up. With a bigger budget and a proven fan base, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller know exactly what we want with this instalment. Put simply: more. But it is not more of the same like in 'The Hangover: Part II'. It is more of the different. Because that's what makes this series so great as a comedy. It's humour comes from within its own medium; it laughs at itself and at its industry. The irony of the sequel's existence is not lost on the filmmakers either, and they don't play dumb with the audience at any point. Pay attention to the details and you'll notice long recurring gags that are essentially inside jokes for those who've seen '21', in a way that '21' can now be viewed as making fun of '22' and vice versa.
This is an intelligent comedy, a refreshing experience given the recent disappointment that was 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are the highlights, of course, and their chemistry as partners is so great to watch it truly is what makes the series tick.
Between self-reflexive jokes that almost break the fourth wall there exists slapstick aplenty, and this is important, as it reminds us that above all, '22 Jump Street' is just for fun. Perhaps that's not how Sony Pictures sees it but for Lord, Miller, Hill, Tatum and the audience that is what matters most. Having fun. Perhaps the a more apt title would be '22 Jump Street: Hollywood Film Fun with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, featuring Ice Cube'.
I wish there were more comedies with as much optimism as this one, even if it tears down the very system that helped create it.
