Another year has come and gone, and a new one has begun. Let's countdown to see what were the top 10 highest rated films of 2014 by the Everything Film team!

Ranking Films: Top 10 Rated Films of 2014

out of 10

8.5

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' is Marvel's best solo film in a long time, probably since 'Iron Man'. Instead of becoming a generic superhero film, Marvel changes the formula for the second instalment of 'Captain America' and while still having superhero elements present in the film, the sequel is actually a spy thriller, and done right. Daniel calls the sequel "thrilling, loads of suspense that stands tall over its predecessor." Nic describes 'The Winter Soldier' as it "will leave you breathless, in true political thriller fashion, with twists and turns that will reverberate throughout the Marvel universe."

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' broke passed audience's expectations and became a fun, action superhero film with an emotional core present. Daniel says "the acting is excellent, the story is excellent, and the whole movie just works as a fun winter blockbuster with your favourite mutants back again on the big screen."

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' is a rare sequel that exceeds passed the first instalment. 'Planet of the Apes' sequel offers more complex issues with a great motion-captured performance by Andy Serkis. "Whoever said blockbusters couldn't be art could never have been more wrong than they are today. 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' is 21st century Shakespeare. Spectacle. Excitement. Depth. Inspiration. Enlightenment", Nic describes it.

Snowpiercer

'Snowpiercer' takes the fifth spot of 2014's best reviewed films as it is a perfectly suspensful and disturbing film with a stand-out performance by Chris Evans, who is the only actor to have two live-action films in the top 10. Nic states that 'Snowpiercer' has "many twists and turns in... [the] narrative, much like the locomotive upon which it's set, and some scene changes initially seem so tonally jarring they risk breaking suspension of disbelief."

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Just what 'The Incredibles' did ten years ago, Walt Disney Animation Studios decided to make a superhero computer animated film, this time based upon a Marvel property, which resulted as a great action-packed film, perfect for the whole family "filled with laughs, adventure, action and emotional depth to the story and these characters that makes â€˜Big Hero 6’ a continue winning triumph from Walt Disney Animation Studios" that Daniel states.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is director Wes Anderson's next film, after the critically successful and brilliant movie 'Moonrise Kingdom'. The film is written with excellence and the cast is great, with a magnificent performance by Ralph Fiennes. Nic finds that 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' "is a breathtaking masterclass of cinema and narrative. It combines every single component of filmmaking into a balanced cohesive whole".

Edge of Tomorrow

'Edge of Tomorrow' is a marketing misfire, which became one of 2014's best reviewed films. Whatever you call this movie by, if it's the theatrical title 'Edge of Tomorrow' or the home video title 'Live Die Repeat', which ironically is the film's tagline on the theatrical posters, 'Edge of Tomorrow' is ahead of its time, with a fun and an action-packed engaging story about time travel and two stellar acted leads, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and you have a winner as one of the year's most overlooked films. "Watch the film. Love the film. And repeat."

Boyhood

The awards favourite 'Boyhood' is a perfect film showing childhood, how far technology has grown, family, the passage of time and life in general, filmed in 12 years, 'Boyhood' is a rare film that is hailed as, what Daniel calls it, a "masterpiece".

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Marvel has had a great 2014 with not one, but two films in the top 10 highest rated films of the year. 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is a homerun filled with humour and action-packed sci-fi scenes that feel like they belong to 'Star Wars'. Nic states that 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is "funny, exciting and fresh" and "just a big ball of fun."

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

It's the beginning of the end for 'The Hunger Games' series. Starting from 'Catching Fire's cliffhanger ending, 'Mockingjay - Pt 1' sets the story up for this November's series finale of 'Mockingjay - Pt 2'. While critics have complained about not enough action in the first part, the story and dialogue are interesting enough, filled with humour and character development, that doesn't matter for the lack of action scenes, and to a degree, there are some small action scenes which still make an entertaining time at the movies. Daniel describes the film as an exciting, emotional and full of action.
